Learning Six Sigma does not require a student to be a student of management. People who are experienced in working with reputed companies can also opt for Six Sigma. There are numerous institutes and universities that offer complete course on Six Sigma. There are several levels of learning Six Sigma, which are green belts, black belts and master black belts. These short time courses include the practical sessions and theoretical courses.

Learning Six Sigma is not at all tough for the management students who already have an idea about the operations of various organizations. Six Sigma is a set of rigorous methodologies that are used to identify the defects of a company and finally they are eradicated completely. It allows just 3.4 defects per million opportunities explored by a company.   • DMAIC: This is the most important topic taught to students who are interested in learning Six Sigma. This model helps the green belts to solve numerous problems occurring in practical field. The abbreviated term stands for Define, Measure, Analysis, Improve and Control. At the ‘Define’ stage, the goals of the process are defined for better understanding of the management and employees who will be taking active part in their project. The risk factors and scopes are measured in the second stage. The third and most important stage is analysis where every aspect of a Six Sigma project is analyzed thoroughly to ensure the success of the project. The fourth stage is secured for implementation of the policies of Six Sigma for the betterment of the system. The last stage is controlling the process and making sure that there is going to be no loss but only improvements.
  • Tools and Applications: The Six Sigma tools and applications play an important role in the overall implementation of the strategies. The simple mathematical concepts of probability and factorial are taught to the employees of the organization. While learning Six Sigma you will also need to learn the various analysis methods to evaluate the process scopes and possible yields. There are certain diagrams like Pareto Chart, Ishikawa diagrams and Fishbone Diagrams. These aids in maintaining the data driven approach of Six Sigma. There are certain strategies like – ‘Brainstorming’. It allows the employees of a company come up with ideas for the improvement and affinity diagrams are used to sort out the best ones.


There are many other aspects of Six Sigma which one need to learn in order to become an expert in this field. But the practical knowledge is much important than the theoretical approach. The courses always include both practical and theory classes on Six Sigma.
